Press release
From 17 to 21 September this year, the 62nd regular session of the IAEA General Conference is taking place at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.
The General Conference is the highest decision-making body of the IAEA, bringing together the representatives of all IAEA Member States, and meets annually to review and approve the IAEA's programme and budget and to decide on other matters of interest to the Member States and to the international community, such as: nuclear safety, nuclear safeguards, nuclear security, the transport of nuclear materials, the safety of radioactive waste and technical cooperation.
CNCAN is represented at this event by a delegation led by Mr Rodin TRAICU, President, and will take part in the proceedings of the conference and in a series of bilateral meetings with the heads of the regulatory bodies of Bulgaria, Canada and Hungary and with representatives of the IAEA's technical cooperation and nuclear security departments.
On the occasion of his participation in this conference, Mr Rodin Traicu had a meeting with the representatives of the delegation of Norway, during which the Partnership Agreement between CNCAN and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) was signed for the implementation of the project Enhancing Nuclear Safety and Security in Romania – Improving Disaster Resilience and Preparedness for Response to Nuclear and Radiological Events. The project is being carried out under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and its objective is to improve Romania's capability to prevent the risk of accidents or acts of terrorism in the radiological and nuclear field.
In the discussions held with the IAEA representatives and with the heads of the regulatory bodies with whom he had bilateral meetings, the President of CNCAN emphasized that the Government of Romania has approved the Government Decision on the organization and functioning of the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control. The entry into force of this decision provides CNCAN with the resources necessary for implementing the requirements of the IRRS mission (Integrated Regulatory Review Service - conducted under the auspices of the IAEA), the provisions of Directive 2014/87/EURATOM (on the nuclear safety of nuclear installations) and of Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom (on basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionizing radiation).
