Visit to Extreme-Light-Infrastructure (ELI - NP)
On 6 November this year, Mr Rodin Traicu, President of the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN), organized, together with Prof. Dr. Nicolae Victor Zamfir, Director General of the “Horia Hulubei” National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), a visit to Extreme-Light-Infrastructure (ELI - NP), a visit attended by representatives of the Committee for Industries and Services of the Chamber of Deputies, Parliament of Romania.
The ELI-NP international scientific research centre is located in Măgurele (Ilfov) and represents the largest investment in research in Romania since 1990.
The centre has more than 150 researchers and support staff from Romania and 27 other countries and hosts the most powerful laser in the world (the equivalent of 10% of the power of the sun). in medicine.
According to the available information, there are several industrial applications for a laser of the size of the one at Măgurele, but some of them are not even known yet. For example, laser-accelerated particles can be used in the treatment of radioactive waste.
Moreover, the studies carried out here will find applications in materials for space missions and in medicine.
