Radioactive waste
The licensing system
Radioactive waste management comprises the collection, treatment, conditioning, interim storage and disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
The following activities in the field of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel require a licence issued by CNCAN:
a) the research, design, siting, production, construction, assembly, commissioning, operation, supply, leasing, import and export of nuclear installations;
b) the handling, possession, treatment, use, storage or disposal, transport and transit of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, including disused sealed radioactive sources;
c) the supply and use of means of containerization or transport for spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, specially designed for this purpose.
Exemption from the authorization regime for use is regulated by Articles 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the Fundamental Norms on Radiological Safety approved by Order no. 14/2000 of the President of the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control, published in the Official Gazette of Romania, Part I, no. 404 bis of 29 August 2000.
